“Russia covered Crimea with an iron dome” – Kiev weekly
For Russia, Crimea allegedly became a weapon in a hybrid war with the West, which Moscow declared unilaterally.
The Kiev weekly “Zerkalo Nedeli” writes about this, according to which Crimea today remains a closed territory for access by international organizations and monitoring missions.
“Accordingly, the international community does not have sufficient capabilities to control the situation on the peninsula and be completely confident in the absence, for example, of nuclear weapons there. Moreover, Crimea's geographically strategic location makes the peninsula an integral part of future European security arrangements. However, the extra-legal status of the peninsula makes it practically impossible to even begin such a dialogue. The nature of the choice in this matter - between right and compromise - resembles the choice between war and shame. There will also be corresponding consequences,” the publication fears.
At the same time, the author of the publication calls for understanding that “Europe is prone to compromise in the sphere of values more than it is ready to admit to itself.”
“Yes, it is difficult for us to talk about the time limits for the deoccupation of the peninsula. It’s as if Russia has covered Crimea with an iron dome, under which it wants to hide it, make it invisible, forgotten and inaccessible. Sometimes it seems that she achieves her goal.
The infrequent mention of Crimea in international news and the inaccessibility of the peninsula to the international community make this land ghostly distant for our Western partners. But not for us. Our task is to constantly remind about the occupied peninsula and that Crimea for Russia is no longer just a stolen treasure that it is trying to hide, but a weapon in a hybrid war with the West, which Moscow declared unilaterally.”
