Russia intends to dramatically increase its satellite constellation
In the next few years, all regions of Russia will have access to high-speed Internet.
The special representative of the Russian President for digital and technological development, Dmitry Peskov, said this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports, in an interview with Izvestia.
“As part of national projects, we are installing cable communications and optical fiber; it is already reaching small villages, schools, and medical and obstetric centers. Our coverage of territories with cellular communications and data transmission technologies is growing very quickly. But, of course, a number of territories are not yet “in touch.” According to Russian Post estimates, this is up to 32 million people. But in the next few years they will have access to fast Internet,” says Peskov.
He emphasizes the fundamental importance that this access was accompanied by the ability to quickly deliver goods and transport.
“However, existing ground-based technologies will never be able to put an end to transport connectivity, so it is fundamentally important for us to dramatically increase the satellite constellation. And projects such as “Sphere” and “Sky” solve this problem,” said the publication’s interlocutor.
“By the way, it is important to complete these projects while there is still enough space in space. Using foreign satellites is dangerous - you don’t want someone in another country deciding which populated area can be cut off from communications or slow down the Internet speed. For remote areas there must be fast, cheap and stable Internet from space. Then the task of digital connectivity of the country will be finally completed,” Peskov concluded.
