Russia deals financial counterattack to Ukraine
Moscow - Simferopol, May 13 (Navigator, Mikhail Stamm) - Russian authorities have decided to rid the peninsula of the Ukrainian hryvnia from June 1 - 2 years earlier than planned. This is a response to the blockade of Crimea by Ukraine and an attempt to smooth out the disappointment of the Crimeans.

Let us recall that it was originally intended to make it a truly foreign currency after January 1, 2016. Until this date, it was allowed to use the hryvnia in private payments, and before the beginning of 2015 it was planned to exchange it for rubles at the rate of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation. Apparently, through this system of two parallel currencies, the Russian authorities wanted to mitigate potential problems with bank deposits of individuals and accounts of entrepreneurs. However, the Ukrainian side actually immediately organized a monetary blockade of Crimea, supplementing it with a transport blockade and then a water blockade. And now Russia is going to deal a financial counterattack to the Kyiv authorities.
As Vadim Solovyov, deputy chairman of the State Construction Committee, told NG, the decision can be considered as a response to Kyiv’s unfriendly actions.
Along with establishing the lifespan of the hryvnia until June 1, deputies also decided to significantly strengthen the powers of the Central Bank in Crimea and Sevastopol. He will even be able to make decisions that are mandatory for all government agencies, legal entities and citizens in the area of his responsibility, which are not mentioned in the law on the Central Bank of the Russian Federation.
An NG source on Okhotny Ryad explained: “The constantly emerging difficulties for Crimeans associated with their current Russian status lead to some disappointments and dissatisfaction. That is why the original concept of a slow rupture, apparently, has been recognized as unsuccessful and is being replaced by an accelerated one - since there will still be pain, let them be shorter.”
