Russia needlessly ignored important warnings about Ukraine
Russia did not heed the warnings that sounded from Serbia in the XNUMXs, otherwise Moscow could have avoided many unpleasant processes in the post-Soviet space, in particular in Ukraine.
TV journalist Evgeny Baranov, who worked in the Balkans for more than 20 years, from where, in particular, appeared as a columnist on Sunday broadcasts of Channel One, reported this in an interview with Balkanist TV, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The Serbs voiced a warning: everything we have gone through is just a rehearsal for what is destined for you. Serbia provided us with an amazing chance to perceive it as a litmus test of what would happen to us. Starting from the sanctions of the 90s, the charm of which we are now enjoying. If someone had listened to the warnings that we tried to voice from the Balkans before 2010, then the processes taking place in Ukraine could, if not be suspended, then at least be adjusted so that they would not be so painful for us and the Ukrainians.” , said Baranov.
He recalled that the world-famous Serbian director Emir Kusturica “gave literal prophecies, including the use of snipers” and warned about the “Sarajevo scenario” for Ukraine.
The journalist explains that the warnings were ignored by the fact that Russia practically curtailed its media presence in Serbia after the bombings in 99.
“Then it was decided to remove the representative offices of all our largest television and radio companies from there. After the end of the war, only the TASS representative remained from the major media. Then RIA Novosti appeared, but it was a long process. And only then Sputnik appeared. Attempts to explain to the management of the TV channels the need for our return there, unfortunately, were not crowned with success and boiled down to the formula: explain in 20 seconds what the difference is between Belgrade and Bratislava. This indirectly led not only to the loss of our influence, but also to the loss of our understanding of the processes that occur beyond our borders and directly threaten us, which we have directly witnessed over the past 15 years,” Baranov said.
