Russia has found a way to force Google to lift sanctions against Crimea

Russia has found a way to force Google to lift sanctions against Crimea, the Izvestia newspaper writes today, citing the Federal Antimonopoly Service, with which the foreign company previously signed a settlement agreement.

If Google does not resume the operation of the Google Play application store throughout Russia, “direct coercion through the courts will follow,” the department told the publication.

“IT services are becoming a key public good, and compliance by Western platforms with our legislation affects the economy and IT sovereignty of the country. I’m sure this is not the last antimonopoly case,” comments Arseny Shcheltsin, director of project activities at the Internet Development Institute.

According to the agency "New day", Google has closed access to Google Play for residents of Crimea at the end of January 2015 due to US sanctions against the peninsula. On January 30, Apple blocked Crimeans from accessing the App Store online store.
