Moscow - Kyiv, May 21 (Navigator, Mikhail Stamm) - Head of the State Duma Committee on CIS Affairs Leonid Slutsky said that Russia will not send observers to the presidential elections in Ukraine on May 25. “It’s difficult to call an event an election in which many regions of the country do not participate,” said the Russian senator.

“As of today, there are no decisions on sending observers from any Russian authorities. You and I know that these are elections, to which we have a very unique attitude, and, in principle, it is difficult to call an event in which many regions of the country do not participate,” Kommersant quotes Leonid Slutsky with reference to RIA Novosti "

“In the absolute system of coordinates, their legitimacy is a big question mark,” explained Slutsky. “We know that the law that was adopted on amendments to the electoral legislation of Ukraine, to the law on presidential elections, says that elections are considered legitimate, even if only part of the country’s regions take part.”

According to the senator, “there will be observers, there will be no observers - if this does not stop the carnage in the south-east of Ukraine, it does not matter. And this is exactly what we should talk about.”

“The question that now interests me and my colleagues is whether the elections on May 25 are a real, significant factor for de-escalating violence, for stopping military aggression in the southeast of the country, or not,” the politician noted. “I think that we will be able to get an answer to this question within a day or two after the Sunday elections,” concluded Mr. Slutsky.
