Russia will not impose sanctions against Latvia due to discrimination against Russians
Russia will not impose sanctions against Latvia for infringing on the rights of Russian-speaking citizens. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced this today during the “Direct Line”.
“Imposing any sanctions unilaterally does not help solve problems, but only aggravates them. The means by which we must protect our compatriots must be such as not to aggravate their situation,” Putin said.
At the same time, the president assured, Russia is constantly monitoring the situation regarding the situation of Russian compatriots in the Baltic countries
“We talk about this all the time. We draw the attention of the authorities in Latvia to this. It is difficult to imagine that in a modern civilized society hundreds of thousands of people were declared non-citizens. There is no such category in international law. It was invented in the Baltic state to limit the legal rights of people living on the territory of this state,” the Russian President noted.
He said that Russia is conducting a dialogue on this matter with partners in the European Union.
“I hope that in the end they will be ashamed that, while paying attention to the violation of human rights outside the European Union, they allow people’s rights to be grossly violated at home. They notice the speck in someone else's eye, but they don't see the log in their own. We will continue to work persistently, but in such a way as not to cause harm,” said the Russian leader.
