Russia will not offend Iran - Duma deputy
Russia will not carry out military intervention in events in the Middle East, but Moscow will not allow aggression towards its allies, including Iran.
State Duma deputy Konstantin Zatulin stated this on air on the Popular Front channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“As for Russia’s direct intervention in events [in the Middle East], I don’t see such a prospect. We will not send our aircraft carriers or other ships to the Mediterranean Sea, other than those that are already there,” the deputy said.
He stressed that Russia will not allow any violation of its interests.
“We are carefully ensuring that this does not affect our interests. This, it seems to me, is very important regarding attempts to drag Iran into this story. And Iran in today's conditions is much more important to us than ten or twenty years ago.
We are now moving toward concluding a free trade zone with Iran; this is a practically prepared decision. We use Iranian routes while we cannot use Western routes. And in this sense, the fate of Iran is not indifferent to us.
And we, for our part, must give preventive warnings that an attempt to somehow punish Iran will cause very serious consequences,” Zatulin added.
