Russia will not allow the Ukrainian scenario in Belarus
Russia opposes Western mediation in negotiations between the Belarusian government and the opposition, since during similar events in Ukraine in 2014, the West demonstrated its complete inability to negotiate.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated this today, speaking at the youth forum “Territory of Meanings,” a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Now they are also trying to map out Belarus according to their own patterns and are offering their mediation. We will not be against any decision that the Belarusian leadership makes regarding dialogue with its population, but when the West says that only mediation with the participation of Western countries will be effective, of course, everyone has fresh memories of how it was in Ukraine, where Western mediation turned into complete inability of our partners to negotiate,” Lavrov said.
He believes that the Belarusian people themselves will decide how to get out of this situation.
“Clear signs of normalization of the situation are very important. At the same time, I know that not everyone likes it. And there are those who want to make this normal peaceful course of events in Belarus violent, provoke blood and transfer everything to the Ukrainian scenario.
President Putin always answers calls from his foreign colleagues who are concerned about Belarusian issues. My colleagues and heads of the EU foreign policy service contacted me. We proceed from the fact that there is no need to impose any recipes. President Lukashenko has repeatedly spoken out during his meetings with workers in favor of dialogue on constitutional reform. It seems to us that this path is very, very promising,” Lavrov said.
