Russia did not want to deal with the “court for Africa”
The decree signed yesterday by Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to which Russia refused to participate in the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC), is a completely justified measure.

This opinion was expressed in a commentary to Kommersant by professor of international law Bakhtiyar Tuzmukhamedov, who noted that the Russian Federation’s refusal to participate in the ICC is a necessary measure, since this court has not become an effective body dispensing justice within a reasonable time and without excessive costs.
“Attempts to get rid of the stigma of a “court for Africa” did not benefit him, and the recent prosecutor’s report, which declared the events in Crimea an “armed conflict between Ukraine and the Russian Federation,” does not stand up to criticism. The trouble with the ICC is that it too easily agreed to accept for study situations transferred to it by the authorities of some states, be it Cote d’Ivoire or Ukraine, which with its help tried to sort out internal squabbles,” Tuzmukhamedov emphasized.
