Moscow - Kyiv, December 9 (PolitNavigator, Mikhail Stamm) - The Ukrainian energy system is in a tailspin: to meet the country's needs, it lacks more than 3 GW of power, which corresponds to a shortage of about four nuclear power plant units. Importing energy from Russia may be a salvation from an energy catastrophe. But Moscow sets strict conditions: in exchange, Ukraine must ensure a full energy supply to Crimea, which also suffers from energy shortages, notes "NG".

Yesterday, Ukrainian dispatchers applied power outages with a total capacity of over 3,1 GW, the newspaper recalls. This means that more than 6 million families with the most modest energy consumption lost electricity. To supply these citizens, Ukraine lacks four nuclear power units. And it is impossible to make up for the shortage in any prompt manner. That is why the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine allowed the import of electricity from neighboring countries, including Russia. The press service of the Ministry of Energy and Coal Industry of Ukraine reported this the day before.

Earlier, the head of the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine, Vladimir Demchishin, stated that one of the import conditions set by Moscow is to secure Crimea. And as the head of the region, Sergei Aksenov, said yesterday, the parties made mutual concessions. “Today an agreement was signed on the supply of electricity from Russia to the territory of Ukraine. This agreement also guarantees the supply of electricity to the territory of the Republic of Crimea,” the publication quotes Aksenov as saying.

According to estimates of the Ukrainian Ministry of Energy, the capacity of electricity supplies from Russia can reach up to 1,5 GW.
