Ukrainian ports are one of the main competitors of Russian ports on the Black Sea, Russian Transport Minister Maxim Sokolov said at a meeting with the participation of President Vladimir Putin.

According to him, there are 17 Russian ports in the Azov-Black Sea basin; in terms of total cargo turnover in the Russian Federation, it ranks second after the Baltic basin. More than 60% of cargo transshipment is provided by Novorossiysk.

However, in Novorossiysk, only a few berths have depths from 17 to 22 meters, and in other ports they are completely absent.

“This reduces competitiveness... Our main competitors are the ports of Europe, Asia, including Ukraine: Odessa, Ilyichevsk, Yuzhny (depths reach 21 meters). In our country, as I already said, the maximum depth of dry ports is about 14,5 meters. Of course, this does not make it possible for ships such as “post-Panamax” and “capsize” to arrive,” the minister said.
