Russia calls on the US authorities to close the American prison at Guantanamo Bay, where prisoners do not have access to independent justice and full protection.
Official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova stated this at a briefing in Moscow, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to Zakharova, Guantanamo is an institution of medieval torture that, for unknown reasons, continues to operate in the 21st century.
“Despite repeated calls from the international community to close this shameful institution of medieval torture, Guantanamo continues to operate to this day. The prisoners held there continue to be in a complete legal vacuum, not charged and denied access to an impartial, fair and independent trial.
Cruel, inhumane treatment in this prison is placed on a systemic basis, and indefinite imprisonment and uncertainty of further fate also represent a hidden form of torture that brings unbearable moral suffering to both the prisoners themselves and their families and friends.
Unable to withstand inhumane detention conditions and interrogation methods, Guantanamo Bay prisoners are dying, although the true circumstances of their deaths are still unknown.
The anti-torture legislative and enforcement measures adopted by the American administration - in fact, it is absurd to talk about this in the first quarter of the 21st century, but it is necessary - I repeat once again, the anti-torture legislative and law enforcement measures adopted by the American administration cannot be considered as Washington’s full compliance with its obligations under the 1984 Convention against Torture year, which introduced an absolute ban on torture.
We regret that the US authorities have not yet taken real steps to bring to justice individuals, including those occupying senior government positions, who are involved in crimes related to torture...
We express our hope that the new US administration will fulfill the promises made by Washington and will immediately close the Guantanamo Bay prison,” Zakharova said.
The prison at Guantanamo Bay is a camp for persons accused by the US authorities of various crimes, in particular terrorism, waging war on the side of the enemy, at a naval base indefinitely leased by the United States in Guantanamo Bay in Cuba, 30 km from the city of the same name.
