Russia refused to recognize US leadership. Ukraine remains in the waiting room of the West
For Russian political elites, and even more so for society, integration into the Western world is unacceptable.
A well-known Russian international affairs expert, director of the Carnegie Moscow Center, Dmitry Trenin, stated this in an interview with Kommersant, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“I myself once believed in the possibility of Russia’s integration into the Western world. Later, however, I came to the conclusion that such integration was unacceptable for the Russian elite and, more importantly, for Russian society, mainly because Russia does not accept any external leadership over itself. I’m writing about this in a new book,” the expert said.
According to him, the entry ticket to the Western community should have been Russian recognition of US leadership.
“Countries that purchase such an entry ticket subsequently have to fulfill many requirements in order to seriously transform, but without an entry ticket the integration process simply will not start. Ukraine bought such a ticket. It will, of course, remain in the “anteroom” of Western institutions for a long time, remaining not entirely “its own,” but, from the Western point of view, it is now a state with the right orientation,” Trenin emphasized.
