Russia has won its share of influence on the European continent
Today it will no longer be possible to resolve serious issues in Europe without Russia’s participation.
German political scientist Alexander Rahr stated this on the UkrLife Internet channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Russia may have set itself a goal in the 90s or XNUMXs to become a member of NATO, a member of the European Union, at least an associated one, but under its own leadership. What's the problem with Russia? Russia does not want to integrate like Malta or Cyprus into some Europe under the leadership of Germany and will never do so.
Russia views Europe through the eyes of the Congress of Vienna in 1815. Great powers, a concert of powers, peacefully agree among themselves on spheres of influence, on how to act, not to offend small ones, how to encourage peace in Europe, how to build relations on mutual interests - this is Russia’s idea of Europe. But in Europe this is considered wrong. I don’t know what to consider correct in history. This is right for Russia, as they believe.
Therefore, there are still tensions and conflicts with Europe ahead. But the question is different - the European Union can no longer speak for all of Europe; Russia has won back, regained a very large share of influence on the continent,” Rahr said.
According to the expert, Germany understands this and therefore does not want to completely “burn bridges” with Russia. In particular, the new head of the CDU party, likely future Chancellor Armin Laschet, will adhere to this policy.
“Mrs. Merkel is now in favor of launching the Russian Sputnik vaccine in Germany if it passes all certification procedures. Of course, this surprises many against the backdrop of the Navalny incident and much more. Because Germany still believes that it is necessary to seek pragmatic cooperation with Russia.
You ask me: how will Lashet behave? He also takes a position of pragmatic cooperation where possible. Because we have a concept - this may not always be visible to everyone, especially in Poland and the Baltic states, they always think that the Germans and Russia want to reach an agreement behind their backs, maybe in Ukraine they think so, but this is not so.
It’s just that Germany instinctively, reflexively understands that it is impossible to push Russia out of Europe, because it will be very bad. With Russia we need to find forms of cooperation, mutually beneficial cooperation and make mutually beneficial economic projects in order to bind ourselves with some kind of economic ties, cultural ties, in order to thus stabilize and not destabilize Europe, despite all the ideological differences regarding liberal and democratic values , geopolitical disputes and much more,” added the German political scientist.
