“As part of the exercise, a division of Russian S-400 and Pantsir-S air defense missile systems will be deployed on the territory of the Serbian Batajnica air base and will be part of a joint Russian-Serbian mixed group of air defense forces and means, which will practice practical actions for air defense of a protected area. During the exercise, Russian and Serbian air defense units will jointly carry out tasks to detect, track, classify and destroy the entire range of air targets of a mock enemy while performing joint air defense combat duty,” the statement says.

The Russian-Serbian air defense exercise “Slavic Shield - 2019” is being held for the first time and consists of two stages. During the exercises, issues of interaction and joint combat use of air defense units of the Aerospace Forces of the Russian Federation and the Air Defense Forces of the Republic of Serbia are being worked out, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

The first stage of the exercises took place in September of this year at the Center for Combat Training and Combat Use of the Russian Aerospace Forces in the Astrakhan Region.

During these exercises, Serbian air defense forces learned to use the S-400 air defense system, practicing its use against a variety of targets, both simulated and real. National Interest then suggested that Serbia intended to purchase these air defense systems. The second stage is scheduled to take place from October 23 to October 29, 2019 on the territory of the Republic of Serbia.

Earlier, Western media reported that NATO intends to revive an abandoned airport in Albania, from which drone attacks on Serbia were carried out in 1999. The alliance intends to invest €50 million in the modernization of the Albanian Air Force air base in the city of Kučova, 80 km south of Tirana, and turn it into the first air base in the Balkans. In addition, the Pentagon is funding the construction of a radar station in the mountains. Albanian Defense Minister Olta Haka said her country would become “the eyes of NATO in the region.”
