Russia plans to catch up with the two-fold gap from China and Brazil
Hydropower is underestimated and has great development potential in Russia.
Viktor Khmarin, General Director of RusHydro, stated this at the International Economic Forum 2021, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Hydropower is undervalued. Of course, this is difficult - each river is unique, each section is unique. This makes any hydroelectric power station quite expensive to build.
But so far there is no alternative to pumped storage technology on the planet. On an industrial scale, electricity is stored and regulated exclusively by hydroelectric power plants. We are developing traditional types of energy, this is the Caucasus, this is the Far East.
In general, Russia's hydro potential has been developed by about 20%; we are two times behind a number of countries, such as China or Brazil. From more developed economies, probably four times. Therefore, we have room to develop,” said the head of RusHydro.
