Russia should become one of the five largest economies in the world. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced this today when reading out his message to the Federal Assembly.

“Russia must not only firmly establish itself among the five largest economies in the world, but by the middle of the next decade increase the share of GDP per capita by one and a half times. This is a very difficult task. I’m sure we are ready to solve it,” Putin said.

He also announced the government's intention to extend the average life expectancy of a Russian beyond 80 years.

“The most important basic indicator of the well-being of citizens is life expectancy. In 2000, it was 65 years. Life expectancy growth rates are now the highest in the world. She is 73 years old. But this is not enough. By the end of the next decade, Russia should confidently enter the club of 80 plus countries,” Putin said.
