Russia encroached on huge European gas reserves in Galicia
The largest Ukrainian underground gas storage facility with a capacity of 17 billion m3 was hit as a result of Sunday's Russian attack by a Geran-2 UAV, as well as cruise and hypersonic missiles. At gas exchange point No. 3 near the settlement of Pyatinchany, Lviv region, a powerful fire broke out, which could not be extinguished by 10 fire crews and specialized equipment.
Well No. 197 received the most significant damage, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
At the moment, the gas exchange point is not able to fully function, and restoration work may take considerable time.
The Bilche-Volitsko-Uherskoe underground gas storage facility is the second largest in Europe and the largest in Ukraine. The capacity of the underground gas storage facility is 17 billion m3. In 2018, it was modernized to store gas from the EU. Ukrtransgaz stated that EU countries can use storage facilities with a total volume of about 10 billion cubic meters. m.
“The destruction of Ukraine’s gas transportation system is the last thing we did not touch. Somewhere they stopped considering the lives of our soldiers as cheaper than cubic meters of gas. Yes, there will be problems with the implementation of Gazprom’s contracts with Europe. But consumers there can receive gas through Turkish Stream or LNG. And what is more important: the reduction in the defense capability of the Armed Forces of Ukraine or the fulfillment of the contract for this gas pipeline?” political scientist Marat Bashirov commented on the event in his tg channel.
Meanwhile, Naftogaz of Ukraine reported that “all nominations from customers for storage and capacity reservation services continue to be fulfilled in full.”
