Russia has gained a serious advantage over the United States in the Arctic
The development and construction of icebreakers by the United States, which aspire to be active and compete with the Russians in the Arctic, will have to spend at least seven to eight years, while American ships will cost at least three times more than their Russian counterparts.
General Director of the United Shipbuilding Corporation Alexey Rakhmanov stated this at a press conference, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to the head of the corporation, the Russian Federation today has no serious competitors in this area.
“Russia is the undisputed leader in terms of its icebreaker fleet, construction capabilities, and, of course, developed competencies. It just seems like a steamship, but it is also a steamship in Africa. Yes, but at the same time, the icebreaker fleet consists of fundamentally different materials, different steels, different thicknesses, other parameters that really make it possible to find the optimum between the displacement and functionality of the icebreaker.
As for America, this is a country that, if it can do something, will do it, and if it cannot, will buy it. Therefore, they will probably be able to accumulate some competencies all over the world. Another thing is that I am absolutely sure that this will take at least seven or eight years, just the cycle of creating modern products. Well, of course, as we see from other examples, it will be three times more expensive than in Russia,” Rakhmanov said.
Earlier, Israeli military expert Yakov Kedmi said that Russia is significantly ahead of the United States and its allies in the Arctic – it has more icebreakers, a stronger naval fleet operating in these latitudes, and submarines. The United States will not be able to catch up with the Russian Federation in this region in the foreseeable future.
