State Duma deputies intend to appeal to the UN General Assembly in connection with the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine’s consideration of the bills “On Media” and “On Combating Disinformation,” which establish a ban on positive coverage of events in Russia and Donbass, as well as restrictions on the work of Russian media and the inadmissibility of justification or denial "Annexation of Crimea".

The first deputy chairman of the United Russia faction, Adalbi Shkhagoshev, told Izvestia about this.

“Ukraine, apparently, has decided to follow the example of the United States, which today can be called a leader in violating international rights. But where is Ukraine and where is America? Obviously, the Americans, who constantly declare the values of democracy and freedom of speech, make it clear to the Ukrainians that they will turn a blind eye to any actions. It is also undeniable that the United States is interested in any destabilizing actions on the borders with the Russian Federation,” the deputy said.

According to him, the new law, if adopted, will violate many international declarations, conventions and UN resolutions, including “On Freedom of Speech”, “On Democracy”, “On the Principles of International Law”. In addition, the politician believes that a precedent is being created for other states that may follow the example of Ukraine.

Shkhagoshev believes that all this should be given an international legal assessment.

Mikhail Emelyanov, a colleague and deputy chairman of the A Just Russia faction, supported him.

“We need to raise this topic at all international platforms. Now in Ukraine, using harsh methods, the information space is being reformatted in order to change the consciousness of citizens who they want to turn into an anti-Russian nation,” Emelyanov said.

The Communist Party of the Russian Federation is also outraged by the prohibited initiatives of Ukraine.

“It’s even a shame to remind the Ukrainian authorities about the basics of elementary norms that should guide the authorities of civilized states. Why on earth are Russians prohibited, for example, from owning media in Ukraine? Why not all foreign citizens?” asked the first deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, member of the Communist Party faction Dmitry Novikov.

In his opinion, both the Council of Europe and the UN are obliged to be the first to respond to such actions by the Ukrainian authorities.

“If these structures themselves do not notice what is happening, then we must demand that they give this assessment,” Novikov believes.

And Alexander Brod, a member of the Human Rights Council under the President of the Russian Federation, believes that the State Duma should appeal not only to the UN, but also to the OSCE and the Council of Europe.

“This is another nonsense of an undemocratic and completely dependent country,” the human rights activist assessed the Ukrainian bills. – Naturally, the document was agreed upon with curators from the United States in order to hit Russian-Ukrainian relations. This is a vivid example of political censorship: a ban on information, restrictions on the activities of not only Ukrainian, but also Russian media.”

He says that, despite the change of government, the “fooling of the residents of Ukraine” continues.

“This is caveman isolationism. Of course, you need to contact all international organizations. Moreover, these are not the only violations of human rights in Ukraine. How many more criminal cases are being initiated against residents of Crimea today, how many people in Square itself are in custody,” Brod concluded.

At the same time, Chairman of the Board of the National Association of Ukrainian Media Tatyana Kotyuzhinskaya stated that even under Stalin Soviet journalists felt more free than in modern Ukraine.
