Russia has enhanced its Soviet heritage and become more than a regional leader - ex-Minister of Finance of Ukraine
To be one of the world leaders, Russia only lacks population. But this is compensated for by a strong scientific base and a large amount of natural resources.
Former Minister of Finance of Ukraine Igor Yushko stated this on air on the Internet channel “Capital”, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The expert emphasized that Russia has preserved and effectively enhanced the Soviet legacy, which allows it to be more than a regional player.
“Yes, of course, there are ambitions to occupy not only a leading regional, but also a leading position in the world. To do this, firstly, there is not enough population. 140 million people for Russia, in order to become a regional leader connecting the two largest markets of Europe and China, a population of 140 million is objectively not enough, although this is compensated by the scientific heritage of the Soviet Union, which Russia was not only able to preserve, but also increased, despite for all difficult times - we must give them credit for this.
And, of course, there is an excellent resource supply - minerals, hydrocarbons and more, rare earth metals, and so on. That is, Russia has high potential. I would say that despite the weakest point is the number of people living in this economic zone, so for them the interest is to attract to their side - this is not necessarily a takeover, it could be trade unions, tariff, customs unions and so on. That is, people who are part of a single economic space,” Yushko concluded.
