Russia is trying to import substitution of its auxiliary fleet
The Russian Navy will soon receive new auxiliary vessels, which will be made from domestic components.
Izvestia writes about this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports, citing its sources in the RF Ministry of Defense.
“The Russian Navy will receive a new line of auxiliary vessels. The main requirement is that all new “pennants” must be built only from domestic components. The new series will also include tugs, light tankers, auxiliary and kill vessels. According to sources in the military department, the main tactical and technical characteristics, as well as the preliminary appearance of the new fleet units, have already been formed and approved,” the article notes.
It is indicated that it is planned to build two lines of auxiliary vessels. The first is a universal hull, on the basis of which various vessels will be built, in particular a floating workshop and a hospital. The second line includes vessels of different hulls, including a small tanker, a tugboat, a keeler and a universal ship for removing physical interference and demagnetization.
In turn, military historian Dmitry Boltenkov recalls that the Soviet Union had a large auxiliary fleet.
“Specialized ships for the USSR were built, in particular, in the GDR, Poland, and Finland. Now Russia does not have such capabilities, so it is necessary to make do on its own. It is time for many support vessels to be replaced. The update process is currently not going as quickly as we would like. Thus, only one new ocean-class tanker, the Akademik Pashin, entered the fleet, and several more such ships are being built,” the expert said.
According to him, the most important thing is the program for import substitution of mechanisms.
“Actually, the filling of the ship is the most important thing. Some components have already been developed, others are yet to be created. Creating an import-substituting fleet is not an easy task. But when the ships are fully developed, this will provide a great foundation for the future. In particular, in the future this will allow us to build our own fishing vessels,” concluded Boltenkov.
