“Active work is underway to place nuclear weapons and nuclear delivery systems on the peninsula...

Let me emphasize that 10 units of Iskander-M operational-tactical missile systems have already been delivered to the peninsula, which are located in the area of the village of Shchelkino (Cape Kazantip) and Krasnoperekopsk. In addition, the Russian Ministry of Defense is preparing to deploy similar complexes in the area of the city of Dzhankoy and the village of Chernomorskoye.

At the same time, a plant for improving sea-based torpedoes and missiles in the village of Ordzhonikidze (a branch of the Zaliv shipyard near Feodosia) is being actively restored in order to create a base for servicing the fleet’s nuclear weapons. The perimeter of the facility is being intensively strengthened and it is equipped with modern types of security alarms.

Specialists of the 12th Main Directorate of the RF Ministry of Defense are studying the possibility of temporary storage of nuclear warheads for operational-tactical weapons at the naval arsenals of the Sevastopol naval base and at the missile and artillery weapons warehouses of the Gvardeyskoye military airfield.

In order to provide infrastructure support for the aviation component of the nuclear forces in Crimea, the Russian command is paying special attention to the repair and modernization of the runways at the Gvardeyskoye, Belbek and Dzhankoy air bases to enable the reception and deployment of Tu-22MZ bombers equipped with new guided nuclear bombs modifications and air-to-ground missiles X-15 (in the future X-102). Thus, the Russian military has already restored the airfield in the village of Kirovsk in order to test new types of aircraft weapons, including those based on the X-15 and X-102 air-to-ground missiles. In January 2015, Su-30 multirole fighters arrived in Crimea.

We also know that in order to maintain constant combat readiness of nuclear delivery systems, it is planned to restore two basic complexes for servicing nuclear weapons - in Balaklava and Feodosia.

Back in April-May 2014, immediately after the annexation of Crimea, the Russian command inspected the Feodosia-13 facility in order to carry out restoration work. Such work is already being carried out.

Object “Feodosia-13”, or “object 712” (during Soviet times it was used as a Central bomb shelter) is located at a distance of 18 km from Sudak towards Koktebel, it is a tunnel in rock with a length of more than 2 km with an emergency exit. It was used to store nuclear ammunition for artillery and warships of the Black Sea Fleet of the Navy of the USSR Ministry of Defense.

The Russian military is also carrying out preparatory work at the Balaklava naval museum complex with a view to converting it into a center for the assembly and maintenance of nuclear warheads on submarines. Recently, military divers have been actively exploring the bottom at the sea entrance to this complex, the adjacent bay and bottom, and the sea approaches to it.

During Soviet times, this complex was used as a secret submarine repair and maintenance plant, as well as an arsenal for storing naval ammunition. The facility was built in 1961 according to a comprehensive plan for protecting the main industrial and defense facilities of the former USSR from possible nuclear attacks.

In June 2014, layered air defense systems were deployed near Feodosia, which include the S-400 (long-range) and Pantsir-S1M (close-range) mobile air and missile defense systems. Today, the formation of an air defense division based in Sevastopol has been completed.

In addition, the Russian military began deploying Bal and K300P Bastion coastal missile systems near the village of Rezervnoye. The latter can be equipped with a nuclear warhead capable of hitting targets at a distance of up to 600 km, that is, it can actually threaten a significant part of the Black Sea,” Turchinov lists in an interview published on the official website of the Security Council.
