Russia said what new members it is ready to see in the UN Security Council
Russia is not against expanding the composition of the UN Security Council, but not at the expense of Western countries.
Deputy Director of the Department of International Organizations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergei Zhdanov stated this at a meeting of the Commission of the Federation Council of the Russian Federation on information policy and interaction with the media, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“We fundamentally advocate expanding the representation of Asian, African and Latin American states in the Security Council... We consider India and Brazil as worthy candidates for a permanent seat in the UN Security Council.
As for Western states, it is quite obvious that they are overrepresented in the Security Council, including in its permanent pool. These are France, USA and Great Britain. It is clear that they hold identical positions on key global issues. Increasing the number of Western states in the Security Council will not bring any added value. We oppose Germany and Japan getting permanent seats,” Zhdanov said.
