Russia is going to squeeze out Rolls Royce and General Electric
The Russian government will allocate additional funding for the development and start of production of a family of ultra-high-thrust aircraft engines, exceeding in power all domestic developments, including those from Soviet times.
“Nothing like this has ever been created in our country. These are breakthrough technologies that will open up new opportunities for the development of promising wide-body, as well as heavy and super-heavy transport aircraft,” said Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin.
He is confident of success, citing the example of the successful launch of engines for warships, which were previously produced in Ukraine, but became unavailable after 2014.
“Among other significant successes of the industry is the construction of serial production of marine gas turbine engines from scratch. They are now successfully operated on ships of the Russian Navy... The production of our own helicopter engines has also been launched. Until recently, we purchased them in Ukraine,” the prime minister said.
Russia will compete with the United States, said Alexander Inozemtsev, general designer of United Engine Corporation JSC.
“The task has been set to master 18 more technologies and make a breakthrough that will allow us to compete. In this market, this is the second largest market, approximately 30-35% of the volume, there are only two companies left, Pratt & Whitney left, failed, Rolls-Royce and General Electric remained. We will compete with them in this market niche,” he said.
Inozemtsev told how new technologies were mastered using the example of the creation of a new, less powerful PD-14 engine, which will be used in Russian MS-21 airliners.
“We actually did it for the first time in our practice - this is a hollow titanium wide-chord blade... We had to build it in Ufa - it’s called a “workshop”, but consider it a factory. We have mastered the use of high-temperature ceramics in the hot part; without this, the service life of the hot part will not be achieved. And I would highlight for the first time our development of polymer composite materials – carbon fiberglass, which we used in the engine nacelle,” the designer listed.
He named one advantage over American competitors.
“Moreover, for the first time in world practice, we conducted a certification test called “Engine resistance to volcanic ash.” Our competitor, the American, did not pass this test. He managed to get through before these demands appeared. On October 15, we received a type certificate and at the end of 2020, a production approval certificate. That is, serial production of the engine is ready,” the specialist concluded.
