Russia tells US whether the North Pole will be next after Crimea
As part of the struggle for the riches of the Arctic, Russia does not intend to deploy weapons in the North Pole area.
Chairman of the International Committee of the Federation Council of the Russian Federation Konstantin Kosachev stated this during a meeting with the delegation of the Stanford Russian-American Forum, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“You said that the United States uses force in the Pacific region without restrictions. Can this be compared with the use of Russian forces in the Arctic region?” asked a question from the audience.
“There are consolidated conclusions from experts from five Arctic states, including the United States, that the level of military confrontation in the Arctic is absolutely low, insignificant, and no uncontrolled militarization of the Arctic is taking place. This applies to all Arctic countries, including the Russian Federation. These are the conclusions made by military experts. Everything else is in the realm of hypothetical intimidation. Since Russia “occupied” Crimea, it means that tomorrow it will occupy the North Pole. The reasoning is going on at approximately this level,” said a representative of the Federation Council.
“Even from a military point of view, the militarization of the Arctic makes no sense. Modern means of creating a military threat make it possible to use the land territory of the respective countries without contaminating another region with weapons. Therefore, this is a myth,” added Konstantin Kosachev.
