Russia will launch a new warship
On April 25, the newest Project 12700 mine defense ship for the Russian Navy, Ivan Antonov, will be launched in St. Petersburg. This was reported by the press center of the Russian Ministry of Defense.
“Ivan Antonov” will differ from the lead ship of this project, “Alexander Obukhov”, by improved characteristics, as well as hull architecture.
“The ship’s displacement is 890 tons, length 61 meters, width 10 meters, speed at full displacement 16,5 knots, crew over 40 people. The ship has high maneuverability due to the use of an effective complex of various thrusters.
“This ship has a unique, world’s largest hull made of monolithic fiberglass, formed by vacuum infusion... The advantage of the PMO ship hull is its higher strength compared to steel hulls, which ensures greater survivability of the ship when searching for mines. The service life of a body made of monolithic fiberglass is longer than that of a body made of low-magnetic steel, and the weight of the body is significantly less,” the press center said in a release.
“Ivan Antonov” is designed to combat sea mines, including new, so-called “smart sea mines.” The ship's equipment can detect them both in water and in sea soil.
“The Project 12700 mine defense ship was designed by the Almaz Central Marine Design Bureau. The development uses the latest, highly efficient hydroacoustic stations, located both on the ship itself and on remote-controlled and autonomous underwater vehicles, an integrated bridge system, and a main command post - an automated mine action control system. At the same time, the ship is capable of using traditional minesweepers,” the press center of the Ministry of Defense reports.
