Russia is losing its influence in the CIS, the range of the Russian language is rapidly shrinking
Over the past 25 years, the distribution area of the Russian language in the world has decreased by 70 million people. Special Representative of the President of the Russian Federation for International Cultural Cooperation Mikhail Shvydkoy stated this today, speaking at the Federation Council.

“The reduction is primarily due to the countries of Eastern Europe. In 1991, Russian was the language of communication for 350 million people; now it is for 280 million people. Year by year, this habitat becomes narrower for a number of reasons,” Shvydkoy said.
He believes that Russia's influence on the CIS countries is largely inertial.
“Russia must train teachers for the Commonwealth countries. Today, funds to the extent required are not provided for this. There are 25-30 years left. People who lived in the Soviet Union are leaving. This resource still exists. If we want to maintain influence in the CIS, this is first of all education,” Shvydkoy said.
He called for attracting young people to Russian educational institutions and paying for it.
