Russia stole a gold medal from our athlete – Ukrainian Minister of Sports
The Ministry of Youth and Sports of Ukraine Igor Zhdanov believes that Ukraine was robbed of a gold medal in the final of the Greco-Roman wrestling tournament, in which Russian athlete Davit Chakvetadze won representative of Ukraine Zhan Belenyuk.

“I believe that Zhan Belenyuk was robbed of his well-deserved Olympic gold. That’s what I told him personally on the phone after the end of the fight. For us, Zhan Belenyuk is a real Champion! And what is stolen in unfair sports competition cannot be considered a victory at the Olympic Games. Huge respect to Zhan Belenyuk for his brilliant performance at these games. for his sparkling execution on these games, skill and will to win. Low bow to national team coach Artur Dzigasov for his titanic work. Thank you!” We are proud of you! For us you are the best!”
He does not explain what exactly the Ukrainian minister saw as the “theft” of the medal, but we note that the Russian athlete won with a score of 9:2.
At the same time, the Ukrainian wrestler admitted that he was weaker.
“Chakvetadze is a serious and inconvenient opponent for me. Next time I will train more to win. This is our fifth meeting, today the score is 3:2 in his favor. What didn't work? I missed an attack on the ground, and it went from there. I didn’t give up, but I got up on the ground when the score was 2:0, and when I got up it was already 2:7. I didn’t expect to have to stay on the ground for so long. If I want to win in the future, I must defend at least all six minutes in any position. Today’s defeat means that I’m not as good as I thought,” Belenyuk commented on his defeat.
This is not the first scandalous statement by Zhdanov. Previously he saidthat Ukrainian athletes will be instructed so that they do not allow themselves to speak in support of disqualified Russians.
