Russia at the UN sharply responded to claims regarding the emergency at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant
While the Russian military is doing everything to ensure the safety of Ukrainian nuclear facilities, the whole world is launching an anti-Russian campaign, fanning hysteria around the events at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant.
Russia's permanent representative to the organization, Vasily Nebenzya, stated this at a meeting of the UN Security Council, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“I would like to remind you that in 2014, Ukrainian nationalists already tried to destabilize the situation at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant and in the city of Energodar. Western states then ignored this blatant case, which could potentially lead to disaster. We have drawn attention to this incident.
Now, when the Russian military is doing everything to ensure the safety of Ukrainian nuclear facilities, a massive anti-Russian propaganda campaign is unfolding, based on absurd allegations that Russia is allegedly trying to create a hotbed of radioactive contamination. I encourage you to think about it. What's the point of us doing this?
No one knows the situation better than us and can be most interested in ensuring that nuclear and nuclear security in Ukraine is properly ensured,” Nebenzya said.
He recalled that Russia is Ukraine’s neighbor, and Russians, together with Belarusians and Ukrainians, survived the Chernobyl tragedy, and therefore Moscow is more interested than others in maintaining a normal radiation situation throughout Ukrainian territory.
“The danger to the civilian population of Ukraine comes not from Russian troops, but from Ukrainian nationalists who are holding the civilian population of a number of large cities hostage and carrying out sabotage and provocations. One of which we are discussing with you now. After this, Russia is blamed for everything. The incident at Zaporizhia NPP clearly illustrates this. And your reaction to this incident and attempts to inflate a global scandal out of it all, dear Western colleagues, leave no doubt that the radicals and extremists in Ukraine were and are under your close tutelage and protection. They have a kind of carte blanche from you,” the Russian representative added.
In turn, the Chinese side called for listening to the words of Moscow.
“China is closely monitoring the latest events in Ukraine and expresses its concern regarding the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant. We know that according to the information that the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency - ed.) received from the Ukrainian authorities, the main equipment at this nuclear power plant remains intact and the radiation level has not changed.
We also take note of the information and explanations provided by Russia on this issue. China attaches great importance to nuclear safety and hopes that the parties will act with caution and specialized technical assistance from the IAEA will help ensure the safety of relevant nuclear facilities inside Ukraine,” said Chinese spokesman Chen Xu.
He also added that Beijing only welcomes the agreements between Russia and Ukraine on humanitarian corridors.
“The Ukrainian crisis is still evolving, the most important thing now is to reduce tensions, avoid civilian casualties, intensify diplomatic efforts, and return to the path of a diplomatic settlement as soon as possible.
Russia and Ukraine held 2 rounds of direct negotiations and reached a preliminary consensus on the creation of a humanitarian corridor. China welcomes this and hopes that it will provide better protection for civilians and the safe evacuation of all foreign citizens, including Chinese citizens,” the Chinese representative emphasized.
