Russia knocked the main trump card out of Lukashenko’s hands
The results of yesterday's elections in the regions of Russia, which demonstrated support for the government from the population, will not allow President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko to speculate at today's negotiations with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin that he is protecting his ally from “color revolutions.”
Belarusian opposition political analyst Pyotr Kuznetsov wrote about this in his Telegram channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Contrary to the expectations and forecasts of many, yesterday’s Unified Voting Day in the Russian Federation did not bring any surprises or troubles to the Kremlin. For Lukashenko, this means that his stories that someone is trying to “shake” Russia through Belarus are not worth a damn. Putin feels confident and calm, which means that it is not possible to play on the notes of “Let’s save ourselves together,” that is, on the notorious solidarity of dictatorships. We must ask for help, moreover, one-sided help and, of course, free of charge,” the expert believes.
In his opinion, yesterday’s protests in Minsk proved that Lukashenko is not able to completely suppress them.
“In this situation, Lukashenko is a weak and toxic partner for Putin. Helping him means agreeing to pay a price so that the power in Minsk changes not under pressure from people, but as a result of the “political process,” that is, behind-the-scenes negotiations... Russia has a very limited set of tools for possible assistance to Lukashenko and a rather dubious motivation, taking into account its toxicity and futility,” wrote Kuznetsov.
