“On August 2014, 38, duty forces of the Northern Fleet discovered a foreign submarine, presumably a Virginia-class submarine of the US Navy, in the Barents Sea. A shipborne anti-submarine strike group, as well as an Il-XNUMX anti-submarine aircraft, were sent to the specified area for search and tracking,” RIA Novosti reported, citing a high-ranking source in the General Staff of the Russian Navy.
According to the agency’s interlocutor, the anti-submarine forces of the Northern Fleet “squeezed out” the submarine from the border waters of the Russian Federation. Contact with the submarine lasted approximately 27 minutes, after which the American submarine left the area.
“This is far from the only case of detection of foreign submarines in the Barents Sea recently. “Such behavior of NATO submarines in the Barents Sea has more than once become the cause of dangerous navigation accidents,” the interlocutor noted.
So, in 1992, at the exit from the Kola Bay, a nuclear submarine of the US Navy Baton Rouge collided with a submarine of the Northern Fleet K-276, and in 1986 a nuclear submarine Splendid of the British Navy with a strategic missile submarine destination of the Northern Fleet "Typhoon".
One of the main versions of the death of the nuclear submarine "Kursk" in 2000 was the collision with the nuclear submarine of the US Navy "Toledo".
As Navigator reported, earlier the official website of the US Navy reported that the missile cruiser Vella Gulf entered the Black Sea on August 6 to maintain “peace and stability.”
