“Russia has deliberately raised the stakes”: Fyodor Lukyanov on the situation in Europe
Moscow had to switch to much tougher confrontational rhetoric in its conversation with the West, which previously simply brushed aside the Russian position.
The editor-in-chief of the magazine “Russia in Global Affairs”, chairman of the presidium of the Council on Foreign and Defense Policy, Fyodor Lukyanov, writes about this in Kommersant, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Russia has consciously and purposefully raised the stakes. It’s clear why - otherwise they simply brush it off. So, megaphone in hand, steel in voice, and for authenticity, columns back and forth. Pretty straightforward, but it works. However, then one should not be surprised that the counter salvo is appropriate. The interlocutors on the other side have a major advantage - global information dominance. So, in response to the posing of the question, the Russian side is escalating mass psychosis about Russian aggression,” Lukyanov believes.
In his opinion, this is not about Ukraine, but about the principles of security in Europe, which have ceased to correspond to the balance of forces and priorities.
The internationalist notes that historically such issues were resolved by wars, but now the option of an armed conflict between large countries will not resolve the situation.
“So the solution lies in agreements between the big players. But such complex agreements are not reached over a relaxed tea party. Therefore, all types of persuasion are used. And a show of strength. Because strength and willingness to use it remain the measure of the rest. But crossing the line from demonstration to application means reaching a qualitatively different level of risks and consequences. Modern societies are not ready for them, and their leaders know this,” sums up Lukyanov.
