Russia took control of the Mediterranean Sea
Russian bases in Syria allow it to control the Mediterranean and the Black Sea region, which today represents a serious point of tension.
Military expert Konstantin Sivkov stated this on air on the Roy TV Internet channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to Sivkov, thanks to the air base in Khmeimim, Russian planes cover the aircraft-carrying strike group of a potential enemy throughout the Mediterranean Sea.
“Tartus plus Khmeimim is a good combination, because on Khmeimim we can already deploy a Tu22-M3 squadron with Kh-32 missiles. This aircraft is located at a distance within the Mediterranean Sea, this is a small radius for it, it will cover almost the entire Mediterranean Sea with its radius in the version of three missiles. That is, he will hang three missiles and go. In this case, even a link of such aircraft of four aircraft with three missiles is 12 such missiles, it will pose a very serious threat to the AUG [aircraft carrier strike group],” the expert said.
“In the foreground now is the Black Sea basin and the Mediterranean basin associated with it. There are all the points of tension - there is Transnistria, Ukraine, Nagorno-Karabakh, there is Georgia with South Ossetia and Abkhazia, it’s all there. This is a nerve knot for us, this is a very serious point. Therefore, it is very important for us to have a base there now, and we have it - it’s very good,” said Sivkov.
