Russia showed the world the power of its nuclear industry
The most powerful nuclear-powered icebreaker in the world, Project 22220, “Arktika”, officially became part of the Russian nuclear fleet.
Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin attended the ceremony, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Our country is the undisputed leader in the development of northern territories. We are proud that Russia is the only one in the world that was able to create a nuclear icebreaker fleet,” Mishustin said.
He emphasized that the Arktika will become the lead of five ships: Siberia, Ural, Yakutia and Chukotka. Innovative technologies will allow these icebreakers to navigate both deep- and shallow-water routes.
“The icebreaker Arktika embodies the power of our nuclear industry and Russian science. The development of a fleet of icebreakers will make it possible to fully unleash the transport potential of the Northern Sea Route. It will increase the interest of international business in the new transit corridor between Europe and Asia. And of course, it will ensure Russia’s primacy in the Arctic, a region that is strategically important for us,” Mishustin said.
Icebreakers of the new series will be engaged in escorting ships with hydrocarbons from the fields of the Yamal and Gydan Peninsulas and from the shelf of the Kara Sea to the markets of the countries of the Asia-Pacific region.
Project 22220 nuclear icebreakers will be able to conduct convoys of ships, breaking through ice up to three meters thick.
The length of each vessel is 173,3 meters, width - 34 meters, displacement - 33,5 thousand tons.
Let us remind you that Russia does not have the right to take money for the passage of civilian ships along the Northern Sea Route, but is obliged to ensure their safety. Therefore, shipowners hire Rosatom icebreakers.
The navigation season on the Northern Sea Route is getting longer and ports are being revived. In the future, Russia intends to create a system of year-round pilotage of ships. To this end, the first icebreaker of the new Leader class is being built at the Zvezda shipyard in the Far East.
Today, the Northern Sea Route is developing rapidly. Thus, for 9 months of 2020, the total volume of cargo transportation amounted to 24,5 million tons. Liquefied natural gas is mainly transported, and companies that produce it are provided with a number of tax preferences. The state is investing 110 billion rubles in the development of the region’s infrastructure.
