Russia closes NATO's road to the Caucasus
The United States, rather than the European Union, will now be more active in the post-Soviet space.
Scientific Director of the German-Russian Forum Alexander Rahr stated this in a commentary to Nezavisimaya Gazeta.
According to him, the signed peace agreement on Karabakh “is undoubtedly a victory for Russia, but also for Turkey, which can gain access to the Caucasus.”
“Aliyev insists on Turkey’s participation in the peacekeeping mission in Karabakh simultaneously with Russia. He wants it. And it can get the consent of Moscow, which can thus strengthen its relations with Turkey. In addition, by allowing Turkey into the Caucasus, Moscow will close the path there for NATO. And this is important for Russia,” says Rahr.
He believes that Yerevan made the right decision by signing the peace agreement, since Armenia itself could not defend Karabakh.
“But, having spoken from Western positions at the beginning of his premiership, Pashinyan was left alone - Russia did not like it. And after Crimea, Western countries began to look at Karabakh from the position of preserving state territories. That is, they accepted Azerbaijan’s point of view,” the political scientist noted.
The expert also noted that the EU did not react in any way to the situation in Karabakh.
“The EU is now involved in the US elections. And in general he distanced himself from problems in the CIS. Losing its Eastern Partnership. Now in Ukraine, Moldova, and Belarus, the United States will act instead of the EU. And if Ms. Victoria Nuland, known from the Ukrainian Maidan, also appears in the State Department, which is not excluded, then we can assume an increase in US influence in the region in which the European Union was previously active. Geopolitics in the region is changing,” Rahr concluded.
