Minister of Communications Nikolai Nikiforov announced this today at the board of the Ministry of Communications of the Russian Federation.
“At the same time, we must take into account that Hong Kong is equal in area to Moscow, and half of Moscow in population,” Nikiforov said.
According to him, fourth-generation LTE communication technology is already available in the territory where 70% of the Russian population lives.
“There are now 120 thousand LTE base stations in Russia. This is a quarter of all cellular base stations in the Russian Federation. We must reach the level of availability of modern communications – 97%.,” Nikiforov said.
The minister said that as part of eliminating the digital divide, 35 thousand km of fiber-optic communication lines have been built in Russia. Work is underway in 71 regions. Nikiforov especially noted the construction of an underwater communication line from Sakhalin to Magadan and from Sakhalin to Kamchatka
“If in 2012 there were 32 settlements with more than 10 thousand people, where the fiber-optic network did not reach. Now there are 4 such points left. And for each of them we have an understanding of when the fiber-optic communication line will arrive there,” Nikiforov said.
