According to the general director of the VTsIOM Foundation, Konstantin Abramov, Russians’ expectations of war reached a historical maximum (since 1990) in February 2015 against the background of the escalation of the situation in Donbass and the adoption of anti-Russian sanctions by the West. At that time, 68% of respondents believed in the likelihood of conflict.
Sociologists attribute the current mood not only to the detente in the international situation, but also to the growing faith in the power of the armed forces. Now more than a third of respondents (36%) consider the Russian army to be the best in the world, 47% – one of the best.
The initiative all-Russian survey “VTsIOM-Sputnik” was conducted on June 16-17, 2017. Russians aged 18 years and older took part in the survey. The survey method is a telephone interview using a stratified two-base random sample of landline and mobile numbers of 1200 respondents.
