Russians are ready to be friends with Japan, but do not want to give up the Kuril Islands
Only 1% of Russians clearly support the idea of transferring 4 skeletons of the Kuril ridge to Japan. This is evidenced by the results of a survey conducted by the All-Russian Center for the Study of Public Opinion (VTsIOM) back in March at the initiative of the Japanese Embassy, but published only today.

About negotiations regarding the ownership of the islands Iturup, Kunashir, Shikotan and Habomai: 57% of respondents are aware. Respondents' opinions on ways to resolve the issue of ownership of the islands were divided: 53% of respondents believe that the islands belonged and will belong to Russia, 42% of Russians expressed support for continuing negotiations and the need for mutual agreement.
At the same time, VTsIOM recorded a positive attitude of Russians towards Japan.
“By most assessment grounds (trust, cooperation, prospects), Japan is in the TOP 3 world states from the proposed list. Relations between the two countries are clouded mainly by the Kuril problem,” says Olga Kamenchuk, director of international research at VTsIOM.
75% of survey participants assess Russian-Japanese relations as friendly. Half of the survey participants believe that Russia can, to one degree or another, trust Japan as a friendly country (52%). Russians support strengthening cooperation between the two countries in various areas, primarily in the field of science and technology (90%), as well as trade and investment (79%), foreign policy and security (74%).
Every tenth survey participant (9,9%) expressed confidence in Japan: in the ranking compared to other countries (respondents were offered a choice from a given list), it is in second place after China (25,0%). The third position is occupied by India (9,6%).
