This is evidenced by a sociological survey conducted by the All-Russian Center for the Study of Public Opinion (VTsIOM).

27% of respondents believe that the consequences could be negative. In particular, they cite the threat of war with the United States and tension in relations with the West. Every tenth (11%) believes that the consequences can be positive: Russia will strengthen its position in the world and improve its defense capability.

67% of Russians follow the development of the military conflict in Syria, of which every fifth (21%) regularly. Every third respondent (34%) notes that the situation in Syria is worsening, and almost the same number (33%) believe that it is not changing for the better or for the worse. According to 15%, events are gradually returning to normal.

The majority of Russians (73%) consider criticism of the actions of the Russian military in Aleppo to be unfounded, 6% are of the opposite opinion.

On the issue of Russia's participation in the Syrian conflict, a third of respondents support the current policy of the authorities (32%). According to every fifth person (21%), it is necessary to slow down actions or take a cautious position. The shares of those who believe that Russia should refuse to participate in the conflict (14%) and those who advocate even more active actions in the region (16%) are almost evenly distributed. Moreover, the latter point of view is held by significantly more Russians (35%) among those who regularly monitor the situation in the Middle East.

An initiative all-Russian survey by VTsIOM was conducted on October 8-9, 2016 in 130 settlements in 46 regions, territories and republics and 9 federal districts of Russia. Sample size: 1600 people.
