This is evidenced by the results of a sociological survey conducted by the All-Russian Center for the Study of Public Opinion (VTsIOM).
Let us recall that Sokolovsky received a suspended sentence of 3,5 years for posting a video of his fun online, accompanied by offensive comments about Christianity, and Pussy Riot was sentenced to 2 years in prison.
20% of respondents consider Sokolovsky’s sentence too harsh (in the case of Pussy Riot this was 33%), 36% of respondents consider the sentence to be an appropriate punishment (31% for Pussy). 16% considered the sentence in relation to the Pokemon catcher too lenient; 15% had this opinion in relation to the “singers”. 17% of respondents said that Sokolovsky should not be judged at all; in the case of Pussy Riot, 10% of respondents shared this opinion.
Catching Pokemon in the temple was regarded as sacrilege by 34% of respondents. A quarter of respondents classify the action of blogger Sokolovsky as an offense, incl. 11% - as petty hooliganism, 14% - as a crime requiring criminal punishment. The rest give more lenient assessments: 18% call the young man’s act “self-promotion”, 16% call it childish.
The overwhelming majority of respondents are confident that Sokolovsky deserves punishment in one form or another, but they themselves offer rather mild options. Thus, every third (32%) was in favor of community service, and every fifth (19%) was in favor of a fine. Imprisonment for 15 days was named by 5% of respondents, prison term - almost every tenth, incl. 7% – real, 5% – conditional.
