Russians stop flying to Ukraine via Belarus
The number of passengers flying from Russia to Ukraine and back via Minsk has been falling for the last three years.
The general director of Belavia Airlines, Anatoly Gusarov, announced this today at a press conference in Minsk, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“There is an opinion that traffic volumes are growing due to the lack of air traffic between Ukraine and Russia. This is not entirely true. Indeed, this is a very important component in the volume of transportation. But over the past three years we have seen that this flow is gradually decreasing. Political, economic, cultural ties between these countries are still decreasing, and the number of passengers is decreasing,” Gusarov said.
The company, according to him, is increasing volumes by 20% per year due to transportation from Central Asia and the Caucasus to Europe. However, flights to Kyiv, Odessa, Kharkov and Lviv remain popular.
Deputy General Director of Minsk Airport Vasily Kornev noted that Belarus has to fight for passenger traffic between Ukraine and Russia with Istanbul, Warsaw and Riga.
“We sought to reduce the time it takes to serve the passenger so that he would be comfortable. In one terminal: profits immediately go to departure. And we have a peculiarity: passengers arriving from Russian destinations do not undergo any control. The passenger’s luggage is transferred by transfer, our equipment allows it,” Kornev said.
