Russia was called upon to help Armenia without going to war
Moscow should not interfere in the military conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh, but Russia cannot allow Yerevan to lose.
The director general of the Russian International Affairs Council, Andrei Kortunov, told Kommersant, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Russia’s direct military intervention in the Karabakh conflict would be unwise, given that such action would immediately deprive it of its right to act as a key mediator between the parties. There is no reason to believe that Moscow will choose this scenario, given all its previous statements and the unexpectedly soft position that President Putin has taken towards Turkey, which stands behind Baku.
In addition, Moscow cannot help but be aware that the current situation was largely provoked by Nikol Pashinyan himself with his emphatically harsh statements addressed to Azerbaijan, which his predecessors did not allow,” the expert believes.
“However, having complaints against Nikol Pashinyan, Moscow cannot allow offended Armenia to leave its orbit of influence - such a scenario would be a bad example for relations with other allies in the post-Soviet space and would have extremely unpleasant consequences for Russia’s strategic interests throughout Eurasia, adds Kortunov. “Therefore, refusing to fight for Armenia, Russia should consider options for helping Yerevan, including the supply of weapons that could protect its ally from defeat.”
