Russia is called upon to mark the 300th anniversary of the proclamation of the empire
A public council consisting of scientists, publicists and activists proposes to celebrate the 2th anniversary of the Russian Empire on November 300.
Russian State Duma deputy Konstantin Zatulin stated this today at a press conference in Moscow, a PolitNavirator correspondent reports.
“In 91, we faced the emergence of various new independent states, many of which are now retroactively extending their history. This can be treated ironically, but the fact remains: the peoples who previously gave their names to the Union republics are experiencing a period of independent state existence for the first time. And the Russian Federation is the successor of the Soviet Union, which in turn, no matter how much it denies it, was the successor of the Russian Empire. We are talking about preserving the continuous state existence of Russia as such,” Zatulin said.
He believes that empire is a controversial term that scares many, which is why the initiative to celebrate the anniversary did not arise at the state level.
“Empire is an alternative to national fragmentation and is not synonymous with a nation-state built along narrow ethnic lines. We see in the neighborhood how multinational Ukraine is trying to turn into a single-national mono-ethnic country, pushing out other ethnic groups and peoples from political and public life, humiliating them. The Russian Federation is an alternative to this narrow-minded nationalism, which in the CIS space is a fact of the existence of some states,” Zatulin said.
The Russian Empire was proclaimed on October 22 (November 2), 1721, at the end of the Northern War, when, at the request of senators, Peter I accepted the titles of Emperor of All Russia and Father of the Fatherland.
