Rossotrudnichestvo overslept Belarus
Last year, Belarus burst into the center of the Russian news agenda. Rallies, arrests, a sea of emotions from all sides. And only one Russian structure operating in Belarus maintained stoic calm in those days. By an amazing coincidence, it is this structure that is responsible for Russia’s international humanitarian cooperation.
Last year, Rossotrudnichestvo should have received a powerful charge of energy. The agency, which in some circles had acquired a reputation as a collection of sinecures for retired officials and retired international journalists, was headed by Yevgeny Primakov, energetic and seemingly ready to bring a new fresh stream to the slowly rolling waters of the agency's routine.
In Belarus, the department has three representative offices: in Minsk, Brest and Gomel. However, if we try to understand how Rossotrudnichestvo is fighting for souls and minds in a republic, to which Russia has no one closer, then we will easily understand why Russia has so little influence on what is happening in Belarus.
The fact is that, in fact, there is no current agenda for the branch of Rossotrudnichestvo in Belarus. In August 2020 (the peak of the confrontation in Minsk), Rossotr got away with quoting the official statement of the Russian Foreign Minister and a dry message that the Russians were detained, but had already been returned home. The rest of the representative’s life consisted of memorable dates. The Russian Center for Science and Culture in Minsk reminds us that the Olympic Games opened in Athens 16 years ago. 170 years ago, Nevelsky’s expedition reached the mouth of the Amur. Viktor Tsoi died (30 years ago).
Traditional scientific readings will be held in the Pushkin Mountains. The section “Public Diplomacy” on the website of the representative office is especially beautiful - schoolchildren took part in thematic sessions “Saratov Agglomeration 2025”.
