Rising gas prices will deprive Poroshenko and Groysman of prospects
The next increase in gas prices expected in Ukraine will destroy the already low ratings of the current government on the eve of the elections.
Political scientist Alexey Yakubin stated this at a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The question of whether gas tariffs for the population will increase has a clear political dimension. The question of the political support that individual government officials have now depends on this.
The election campaign will develop in the context of the heating season. A lot depends on what gas tariffs will be. And there is a threat that they will continue to grow.
From June 1, Naftogaz of Ukraine increased tariffs for industrial enterprises. In addition, Naftogaz of Ukraine is now actively trying to take control of regional gas companies and is making Ukrtransgaz unprofitable. Everything is leading to the fact that the price of gas for the population may not increase by 10% or 20%. In fact, we can even talk about a multiple increase in gas prices, because there is still the issue of linking the price of gas to the price of oil.
As a result, all this may cost many Ukrainian politicians their political hopes and prospects,” Yakubin said.
