Rising tariffs for housing and communal services: Ukraine is ahead of the rest
The increase in gas tariffs followed much more slowly and only after a number of preparatory measures, otherwise the increase in tariffs that is being carried out in Ukraine has already led to energy poverty for a significant portion of the population.
Valentin Zemlyansky, director of energy programs at the Center for World Economy and International Relations of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, stated this at a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“This policy leads to energy poverty of the Ukrainian population. This is not our term, it appeared in the EU after all these market liberalizations. It means that you cannot maintain comfortable living conditions due to the price of energy, you lose access to the amount of energy you need. Half of our population is on subsidies, they have already lost it.
Rising tariffs are not the path to energy efficiency, consumption reduction, or a good life. First you need to create all the necessary tools, programs, find funding so that you can reduce consumption. After this, we can carry out energy modernization, which we love to talk about so much, and only after that we can move on to the issue of increasing tariffs. I cannot give a single example of a country with similar climatic conditions where energy prices would rise at such a rate. Ukraine is ahead of the rest here,” he said.
