Rostislav Ishchenko: There is no reason to raise the issue of elections for the governor of Sevastopol
Today’s failure of the vote in the Legislative Assembly of Sevastopol on the issue of introducing gubernatorial elections is absolutely natural, says political scientist Rostislav Ishchenko.

According to him, the current procedure for appointing a governor corresponds to the practice of other regions of Russia, and the issue of elections was raised prematurely, since the term of office of the current head, Sergei Menyailo, has not yet expired.
“In Sevastopol, as in the rest of Russia, there should be a normal constitutional process: deputies of the legislative assembly propose three candidates for governor to Putin, and the president himself appoints the governor. And in Sevastopol it must be exactly the same as throughout Russia, otherwise it will not be a single country. But, as far as I remember, Governor Menyailo’s term of office has not yet expired,” Ishchenko said.
“Direct elections are not the only democratic way to form government bodies. In addition, the issue of national security and stability in the region is particularly important. Is now really the time to discuss the format of the election of the head of the city, which is still 3 years away?!” – in turn, said the Vice-Governor of Sevastopol Alexander Reshetnikov.
