Rostov may be preparing to receive Dodon for permanent residence - expert
Moldavian President Igor Dodon is repeating the mistakes of his Ukrainian counterpart, fugitive ex-President Viktor Yanukovych, trying to sit on two chairs. His attempts to flirt with the nationalists in order to stay in power will not lead to success.
Political scientist Armen Gasparyan told PolitNavigator about this, commenting yesterday's protests in the center of Chisinau and an unsuccessful attempt to “assault” the government.
“Veterans of the war in Transnistria are people who were guided by the slogan “Russians to the Dniester” announced then in Chisinau, these are people who killed Russians. It goes without saying that people with such a philosophy have supported parties that advocated union for many years.
By the way, not so long ago six political forces formed a single movement for union with Romania. Igor Nikolaevich Dodon, as president, is trying to sit on two chairs.
On the one hand, he has his own views and the position of his electorate, and on the other hand, he perfectly understands the situation on the domestic political scene in Moldova, and it is obvious to him that the wrong movement means resignation with all the ensuing consequences.
He's trying to sit up. But from this point of view, there is a serious danger, which is called the lesson of Yanukovych in 2013-14. Yanukovych also tried to sit on two chairs. I think everyone knows well how it ended for him.
Unfortunately, what we see performed by the Moldovan authorities on the first day of protests is the same, in the footsteps of Yanukovych,” Gasparyan concluded.
